First tracks at Rouse Hill for Sydney Metro Northwest
In an historic milestone in the journey to bring Sydney Metro to Macquarie Park and North Ryde, the first railway tracks have been laid at Rouse Hill for Australia’s biggest public transport project with $12 billion in funding confirmed in the recent NSW Budget.
Altogether, 108 kilometres of railway steel will be used between Rouse Hill and Epping for Sydney Metro Northwest, which is Stage 1 of Sydney Metro.
Inside the Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill, 19 kilometres of railway steel, 30,000 tonnes of ballast and 11,500 sleepers are being laid. It will be home to 22 metro trains when services start in the first half of 2019.
Construction of the trains facility is moving quickly. It has been future-proofed for the second stage of Sydney Metro, the City & Southwest project, when it opens in 2024, and has ultimate capacity to stable 46 eight-car trains and maintain 76 trains.
It will also house a state-of-the-art operations centre from where all Sydney Metro operations will be run, and which is also currently under construction.
Over the next four years, $6.2 billion will be invested in the NSW Budget towards Sydney Metro City & Southwest and $5.8 billion for Sydney Metro Northwest, with both stages of Sydney Metro now fully funded.
The amount includes $1.3 billion in 2016-17 to continue work on the Metro Northwest and $1.4 billion in 2016-17 to continue the Metro under the Harbour, through the CBD and on to Bankstown.
The 2016-17 funding for Sydney Metro Northwest includes laying tracks and building eight new metro stations, procurement of Sydney’s new fully-automated metro trains and ongoing construction of the 4 kilometre skytrain.
In 2016-17, funding for Sydney Metro City & Southwest includes the tender process for twin tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham and early construction work in 2017, including building demolitions and planning and design work.
Sydney Metro Northwest includes eight new metro stations, five existing stations upgraded to metro standards and 4,000 new commuter car parking spaces.
Service start in the first half of 2019 with a new metro train every four minutes in the peak – that’s 15 trains an hour.
Construction of Sydney Metro City & Southwest, the second stage of the project, will begin before the end of 2018, with services expected to start in 2024.
